As light rays enter your

July 31, 2010 - 6:03 pm No Comments

As light rays enter your eye, your cornea refracts — bends back — the rays to focus them on your retina, which is the back part of the eye.

During LASIK surgery your cornea is cut and reshaped. A special device is utilized which will cut a hinged flap of thin corneal tissue off the cornea and the flap is lifted out of the way. The laser reshapes the corneal tissue, and the surgeon replaces the flap, which immediately sticks to the eyeball. Because laser is used, there are no stitches. A perforated metal or plastic shield is placed over the eye to protect the flap.

Surgery typically lasts just 10-15 minutes per eye. Most of the time the doctor will perform surgery on both eyes consecutively. On occasion, he or she will have you wait a few days to see how the surgery turned out on the first eye before proceeding to the second eye. Generally, healing is rapid with most people experiencing complete recovery within a few days.

While mostly everyone achieves 20/20 vision after surgery, 20/20 does not guarantee perfect vision.

5 yrs in jail for carrying plastic bags from Aug

0 Comments | DNA : Daily News & Analysis; Mumbai, Jul 27, 2010

Get yourself into good old habit of carrying a cloth bag while going to neighbourhood kirana shop or vegetable vendor. You would soon be devoid of convenience of going empty hand to the shopping and coming back loaded with so many plastic carry bags.

Just five days are left and the state would become a complete ‘plastic carry bag free zone’.

The state government has issued a notification imposing a complete ban on manufacturing, storing, selling, carrying and transportation of plastic carry bags from August 1.

Strict punishment like five years jail and Rs one lakh fine have been introduced for the violation of the new rules, the government would initially try to use corrective measures.

“We want people to understand the hazards of using plastic bags. Consumer pressure would be more effective than the law itself,” Member secretary of the Rajasthan Pollution Control Board, DN Pandey said.

However, the government is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that the ban is followed strictly. Knowing that it would be difficult to keep a tab on small vendors, the government has targeted manufacturers asking them to stop production.

Next in the line are mall owners and big retail chains

Integrity is still valued today [Edition 2]

0 Comments | West Briton, The; Truro (UK), May 6, 2010

MY third child is coming to the end of her degree course, writes Charles Blizzard of Emmanuel Baptist Church.

She has been given a date in July for her graduation and my wife and I will attend this event as proud parents.

This invite brought back memories of attending the graduation ceremony of my eldest son.

As is the custom at such events, honorary doctorates were awarded to people who had distinguished themselves in some way.

Honorary doctorates at this ceremony were awarded to three people, one of whom was the journalist Alan Johnston.

Alan Johnston, you will remember, was the BBC Gaza correspondent who was kidnapped and then held hostage for four months before being released.

Having received his honorary doctorate, Alan Johnston made a short speech.

The audience were hushed, listening intently, making sure they heard every word.

Why was this? What was his secret? I guess many, if not all there, knew of his experience.

They knew of his reputation for fair and honest reporting; they had seen the way that he had conducted himself after his release without sensation or drama.

I think that audience recognised something in Alan Johnston that is rare – integrity.

It warmed my heart that in our cynical world, people still admire such a virtue.

The best way to insure against dietary

July 29, 2010 - 10:30 am No Comments

The best way to insure against dietary disaster when you do get those cravings throughout the day is to plan ahead and use a little strategy.

For one thing, try to plan 5 to 6 small meals with one to be eaten around every 3 hours of the day and make it a point not to miss any of them. It takes an average of 2 ? hours for the human body to digest a meal, so by the time you start to feel a craving coming on, it?s almost time for your next meal anyway.

Make it a point to drink plenty of water. Quite often, feelings of hunger between meals are really your body trying to signal thirst. By keeping a bottle of water with you all day and making it a point to take constant ?sips? throughout the day, you will keep hydrated, feel better, and eliminate one common cause for cravings to happen.

When you are at home, always try to keep some fresh fruit on hand.

You’ll know when this is

July 29, 2010 - 2:05 am No Comments

You’ll know when this is happening when you become bored. That’s the sign it’s time to stop.

Composition is a different story.

The form of the piece already dictates when you should stop. For example, an ABA form tells you to play the A section once or twice, go to B, back to A then bring the piece to an end. Of course the amount of repetition and contrast is a personal decision but the form establishes both beginning and ending. It’s a nice safe way to say that yes, I have a piece of music here. Now, improvisations can have form as well. The big difference is that you don’t consciously think about putting the music into a predefined shape.

But for some unknown reason, most improvisations do have symmetry – that is they take on a form of their own. I don’t know if this is because of human beings innate rhythm (heartbeat) or what.

Even Zen flute music, which may be the most freely inspired improvisation style around has some structure.

You can hear it in the phrases. Beginnings and endings. Don’t worry too much about them.

Regular attention to the tires

July 29, 2010 - 1:25 am No Comments

Regular attention to the tires on your automobile will save you money, improve vehicle handling, and improve safety.

Tires should be rotated every second oil change; that is, tires should be moved to a different position on the car. This will ensure that the tires wear evenly and provide their maximum life.

Inspect the tread on your tires. They should be wearing evenly and not be too worn. If the tread is disappearing, or has worn away entirely, then the tires are unsafe to drive on as they may burst while driving. Visible threads are a sure indication that you need new tires. If the tread is wearing unevenly this may be a sign that your wheels are out of alignment. Other indications are that the car pulls to one side or the other, or simply feels “squirly” on the road.

Keeping your tires properly inflated is essential to extending their longevity and saving you money.
